Some Facts about Shark Finning

-Shark specialists estimate that 100 million sharks are killed for their fins annually.
-Any shark is taken-regardless of age, size, or species.
-Shark populations have dropped by 90% in the last 30 years
-The shark is most often still alive when it is finned and tossed back into the water
-Longlines, used in shark finning operations are the most significant cause of losses in shark populations worldwide.
-All Oceanic life is affected by longlining. (sea turtles, whales, dolpho
-One pound of dried shark fin can retail for $300 or more. It's a multi-billion dollar industry.
-Even protected waters are fished with little to no monitoring
-shark populations are depleting faster than their reproductive abilities can replenish populations
-WE ARE FISHING SHARKS INTO EXTINCTION
-China is the largest consumer & trader of shark fins in the world
-According to Statistics Canada there are currently over 1 million Chinese people currently living in Canada.
-47% of them reside within Ontario.
-There are currenlty no laws against importing shark fins into the country

There are currenlty no laws against importing shark fins into the country, this coupled with the demand to bring them here for the Chinese population makes Canada a contributing force in the quick deterioration of Sharks in our Oceans.

In a time when "Going Green" and environment awareness is taught and preached, I find it increasingly appauling that most developed nations are not paying attention to matters that happen outside of their "land territory". While every Country is responsible for laws on fishing in the waters off their coasts, most of the Ocean is open territory giving way to longlining and the destruction of our Oceans' ecosystem.

Please, help me in making the Canadian government aware of the issues that affect not just Canadians but the Earth as a whole. Please sign my petetion to make the importing and selling of Shark fins in Ontario (hoping to go National!) illegal.
Your support is appreciated.
